Youth Programs

JULY 18 @ 10 AM-4 PM | Summer Youth Class: Large-Scale Sculpture Inspired by Daniel Giordano
Ages 8-12, $65/$50 for members

Participants will explore the artwork of Daniel Giordano and collaboratively create a large-scale sculpture to remain on view at the Museum through the summer. Instructors will guide participants through the basics of sculpting and sight-specific design with found and repurposed materials. Participants and families are invited to attend the artist talk with artist Daniel Giordano later that evening. (Scholarships available)  

JULY 22-26 @ 9 AM-4 PM | Summer Youth Class: Fashion Camp
Ages 12-16, $350/$300 for members

Through upcycling and recycling of existing garments, students will design and create their own fashion lines using these found materials.  Students will learn the basics of fashion design and illustration and how to incorporate this into collection of their very own. A field trip to The Hyde’s current exhibitions and to The Shirt Factory will inspire unique designs and collaborations. Families are invited to a fashion show in The Hyde Butterfly Garden at the end of the week(Scholarships available)

JULY 29, AUG 1 & 2 @ 10 AM-12 PM | Summer Youth Class: The Art of Crafting The Graphic Novel 
$200/$150 for members 

Designed for students in grades 5-8 who are interested in exploring their creativity through both English language arts and visual arts. Over the course of this workshop, students will engage in a variety of activities and projects that will challenge them to think creatively and develop their skills in writing, drawing, and other forms of expression. (Scholarships available)

Meet the instructors: Mrs. Sutton has been teaching ELA at the Oliver W. Winch Middle School for twenty years. She enjoys all kinds of genres, especially graphic novels! Some of her first graphic novels read include: “The New Kid” and “Hey There, Kiddo,” not to mention some of the ‘old school’ graphic novels such as “Diary of a Wimpy Kid” and “Bad Kitty,” which she used to read with her son!  

 Mr. Porter has been an elementary art teacher and current middle school teacher for 13 years. He has always enjoyed sketching and creating stories – especially after one of his favorite comics of all time, “Calvin and Hobbes.” When Mr. Porter isn’t in the classroom, he enjoys coaching hockey & cheering his son at of his many sporting events! 

AUG 10-11 @ 1 PM-4 PM | College Portfolio Preparation
$120

Join Art Educator and Administrator, Melanie Painter to prepare your portfolio for college admission.  This session is for High School students preparing a portfolio for college admission.  Students will leave with a portfolio of artwork ready to show colleges and a list of ideas for summer artwork to create at home or in open studio time.  Students should come prepared with at least 8-12 works of art to document. 

We are excited to welcome guest presenters from The Hartford College of Art and current students from the Savannah College of Art and Design. Students should bring their own device (a phone with a camera) for documenting artwork.  A list of free apps for your device will be provided prior to the class.  

AUG 16 & 23 @ 12:30 PM-4:30 PM | Open Studio For High School Students
$25 per session 

Come work alongside other dedicated HS artists with the assistance of The Hyde Education team.  This is limited to 2-D work including drawing, painting, and collage.  Students may purchase additional materials from the instructors. Stretched canvas and paper will be available.
