The Hyde has a rich collection of American paintings, which has continued to grow since we first opened as a museum in 1963. Artists in the collection include Albert Bierstadt, Winslow Homer, Thomas Eakins, William Merritt Chase, and Childe Hassam.

European paintings were a core component of Charlotte and Louis Hyde’s original collection. They collected works from the Renaissance through the early twentieth century, by artists such as Botticelli, Tintoretto, El Greco, Rubens, Rembrandt, Ingres, Courbet, and Picasso.

This collection has grown significantly in recent decades due to substantial gifts, and features artists such as Grace Hartigan, Ellsworth Kelly, Bridget Riley, and Sam Gilliam. The Feibes & Schmitt Gallery is dedicated to exhibitions of modern and contemporary art.

The Hyde’s large collection of works on paper, including over 1,200 drawings, prints, and photographs, are frequently featured in exhibitions at the museum. The works range from the Renaissance period up to the present day.

Sculpture can be found throughout historic Hyde House—such as works by Luca della Robbia, Edgar Degas, and Anna Hyatt Huntington—on the grounds, and in rotating exhibitions at the museum.

The decorative arts collection consists of around 150 pieces of furniture, 300 glass and metal objects, almost 400 ceramics, and over 800 textiles. Many of these objects were purchased by the Hydes to furnish and decorate Hyde House, and are still displayed in the home today.

The Hyde’s collection offers works of art that span almost 6,000 years with over 5,000 objects. These include works by European old masters such as Sandro Botticelli, El Greco, Rembrandt, and Peter Paul Rubens, as well as work by important American artists including Thomas Eakins, Childe Hassam, Winslow Homer, and James McNeill Whistler. The growing collection of modern and contemporary art features artists such as Sol LeWitt, Man Ray, Robert Motherwell, Grace Hartigan, Andy Warhol, and more.
