Finding St. Jerome

Last chance to see this European treasure discovered in upstate New York before its return to Europe!

Finding St. Jerome features an oil sketch by the great seventeenth-century Flemish artist, Anthony Van Dyck (1599-1641). Reportedly discovered in a barn in Kinderhook, New York, the old painted panel was acquired by Hudson, New York collector Albert B. Roberts. The panel is a preparatory sketch for the Flemish artist’s St. Jerome that is now at the Museum Boijmans van Beuningen in Rotterdam, The Netherlands. At the time, Van Dyck was an assistant in the studio of his mentor Peter Paul Rubens (1577-1640), from whom he learnt the practice of making oil sketches. It is an enormous privilege to exhibit this Van Dyck painting at The Hyde Collection and share it with our community before its return to Europe.
