Hailed as “absolutely joyous, virtuosic and wonderful” (Concerts at the Crane), The Modernistics Trio (Ted Powers, vocals, tap-dance, harmonica, banjo, and guitar; Peter H. Bloom, flute; and Dave Zox, double-bass) will celebrate our feathered friends with exuberant songs, tap-dance numbers and swinging instrumentals. Among the selections are Skylark (Hoagy Carmichael and Johnny Mercer) , Bye-Bye Blackbird (Ray Henderson and Mort Dixon), Little Jazz Bird (George and Ira Gershwin); Serenade to a Cuckoo (Rashaan Roland Kirk), When the Red, Red Robin Comes Bob, Bob, Bobbin’ Along (Harry Woods); and Tico, Tico no Fubá (by Zequinha Abreu…about a Brazilian a sparrow in the cornmeal).
This concert is in celebration of the forthcoming exhibition Wings and Wilderness: Birds and Landscapes of the Northeast at The Hyde Collection, opening June 6.
The Modernistics Trio performs extensively, with concerts for Arts Across Campus in Syracuse, Coffeehouse Concerts in Montrose NY, The Bloomfield Music Series (NJ), Music at Greenwood (CT), Cazenovia Library Concerts (NY), The Whitney Center (CT), SUNY Corning (NY), Willow Valley Concerts (PA), Guilford Library Summer Concerts (CT), and Mahwah Sunday Concerts (NJ), to name a few. The Modernistics also tour as a quintet, with shows at The Stissing Center (NY), Medallion Opera House (NH), Ocean Park Music Festival (ME), Middletown Concert Association, and others.
Ted Powers, vocals, tap-dance, guitar, banjo, and harmonica, has an impressive career in jazz, blues, and pop, including several years as a solo performer in the south of France and tap-dancing in the U.S. with the legendary Jimmy “Sir Slyde” Mitchell. He is acclaimed as a singer, tap dancer and multi-instrumentalist; performs extensively as a soloist; appears on diverse jazz, pop and rock recordings; and performs regularly with Billy Novick, Peter Tillotson, and other jazz notables.
Flutist Peter H. Bloom, praised for “infectious brio” (The New York City Jazz Record) and “exquisite melody” (JazzImprov), has performed in North America, Europe, Asia, Australia, and New Zealand, and is featured on 49 CDs. He has shared the stage with jazz luminaries Sheila Jordan, Charles Neville, Jimmy Giuffre, Ricky Ford, Geri Allen, Jaki Byard, and other legends, and is a veteran of the famed Aardvark Jazz Orchestra (53rd season). Bloom’s playing has been called “breathtaking” (Ivan Rod Review, Denmark), “a revelation for unforced sweetness and strength” (The Boston Globe), and “wonderfully smoky and mysterious” (EarRelevant).
Bassist Dave Zox has performed with the Glenn Miller Orchestra, the Artie Shaw Band, Herb Reed and the Platters, Phil Woods, John Abercrombie, Kenny Werner, Garrison Fewell, and other illustrious artists. Dave played for many years with Boston’s legendary Al Vega Trio and with renowned jazz pianist Harvey Diamond. He serves on the faculties of Northeastern University and Phillips Academy in Andover.
