Ninth Street Women: Lee Krasner, Elaine de Kooning, Grace Hartigan, Joan Mitchell, and Helen Frankenthaler: Five Painters and the Movement That Changed Modern Art – by Mary Gabriel
Join Hyde staff and volunteers for an in-gallery book discussion of the women artists who were friends and colleagues of David Smith. There is a copy of the book at Crandall Public Library and it can be purchased at Northshire Bookstore in Saratoga Springs. To receive a 20 percent discount, request the book being held under The Hyde Reading Group.
About the book: Pulitzer Prize finalist Mary Gabriel intertwines art and life in this portrait of the five women who revolutionized the modern art scene amidst the turbulence of America’s post-war political climate and the hyper-masculine abstract expressionist scene. She explores these artists both from within and beyond their womanhood and their relationships with male artists, while including photographs, quotes, and art criticism to recount the gossip, mythos, and history they painted at the heart of. The book salutes their contributions to modern art history and examines what they sacrificed to make them. For our discussion we will be focusing on just a few sections: introduction, prologue and the three chapters in the “Helen” section.
