The Hyde Center for Arts Education

    Objective

For years, The Hyde Collection has dreamed of turning historic Hoopes House, once the home of Charlotte Hyde’s sister Mary Pruyn Hoopes, into a multi-use space for the Museum and the Glens Falls community. The house is located on the Museum grounds, in need of renovations, and not in use for over 20 years.

With key support from the New York State Council on the Arts (NYSCA), The Hyde Collection is launching a transformational capital and programmatic project to revive historic Hoopes House as The Hyde Center for Arts Education. This major initiative, which is part of The Hyde’s broader Reimagine Project, will meet growing demand for arts education while enhancing accessibility, expanding opportunities for cultural enrichment with equity in mind, and honoring The Hyde’s legacy of preserving and activating historic spaces.

The Hyde Center for Arts Education will become a flexible space – a beehive of activity, without the restrictions of a fine art space (such as art alarms, artwork specific climate control systems, and limited hours). New opportunities for education programs, community events, and living artists to interact with the Museum and collection are just the beginning. Revitalizing Hoopes House will open our doors for more engaging opportunities than ever before.

The total project cost to renovate The Hyde Center for Arts Education is approximately $4.5 million. A $1.35 million NYSCA grant—awarded as a 1:1 match—means every donor contribution helps unlock these critical public funds and brings The Hyde Center for Arts Education one step closer to reality.

  • Project Goals

Expanded capacity is urgently needed: In 2024, The Hyde’s education programs served more than 5,000 participants. These programs are currently supported by a single 800-square-foot classroom, limiting the ability to grow and diversify offerings.

Reviving Historic Hoopes House & Creating The Hyde Center for Arts Education

    • Expanded educational programs for youth, adults, families, and community stakeholders
    • Multi-use learning and event spaces for lectures, symposia, and exhibitions
    • ADA-compliant access, including a LULA elevator, accessible restrooms, and regraded entries
    • Preservation of historic architecture that reflects the Pruyn family legacy and an integral part of the Glens Falls past, present, and future

Reimagine Project Phase 1: The Hyde Center for Arts Education

The first phase of the Reimagine Project focuses on revitalizing Hoopes House, a structurally sound but long-vacant building, into a dynamic, inclusive hub for education and engagement. This adaptive reuse will create more than 7,000 square feet of flexible, ADA-accessible space.

    • Strategic Planning & Fundraising: The Museum is currently marching forward to raise the required funds to match the $1.35 million NYSCA awarded grant. You can help The Hyde meet that goal! Donate by clicking the link below.
