GLENS FALLS, New York—Victoria Palermo did not start with a vision for Artists of the Mohawk Hudson Region when she began poring over more than 1,500 works of art submitted by 365 artists. But the juror of the eighty-fourth annual regional exhibition quickly saw a theme emerging.

This year’s Artists of the Mohawk Hudson Region at The Hyde Collection includes the works of eighty-two artists living or working within 100 miles of the Capital Region. Many of those artworks address the issue of our changing environment.

“As juror of this year’s Mohawk Hudson Regional, I was delighted with the amazing work entered in over 1,500 submissions,” said Palermo, who selected ninety-two works of art to be exhibited in Feibes & Schmitt, Hoopes, and Rotunda Galleries, and historic Hyde House. “I think that the resulting selection reflects the quality and diversity of creative activity across our region and connects to the larger moment that we are living.”

Many of the entries were reflections on our changing landscape. “There was a clear focus,” she said. “Our ‘sleepy hollow,’ our Hudson River, our Lake George—our entire world—are under threat as never before.”

Artists submitted works that portrayed their ideal landscapes, clearly declared the problem, or suggested solutions, and Palermo responded with an exhibition that includes sculptures, paintings, drawings, mixed media, videos, photographs, textiles, prints, and collages.

Artworks centered on the environment are exhibited in Feibes & Schmitt Gallery, the stairwell of the Museum’s education wing, and Rotunda Gallery. Submissions selected for the exhibition that aren’t related to climate are in Hoopes Gallery and Hyde House.

“From the diversity of works submitted and the incredible number of pieces, Victoria has pulled together an interesting, relevant, and cohesive exhibition,” said Jonathan Canning, The Hyde’s director of curatorial affairs and programming. “I particularly like that she identified pieces that could be placed into Hyde House and will really jolt and wake up visitors to the historic rooms.”

An opening celebration will be held at 2 pm Saturday, October 12. Palermo and many of the artists will attend the event, which includes presentation of awards at 2:30 pm in The Hyde’s Froehlich Auditorium. Immediately following, environmentalist and author Bill McKibben will offer a presentation with Palermo about themes expressed in the exhibition. Seating is available on a first-come, first-served basis.

Founded in 1936, the Artists of the Mohawk Hudson Region is among the longest-running regional exhibitions in the country. The exhibition is hosted alternately by The Hyde, University Art Museum, and Albany Institute of History & Art. AMHR provides a benchmark for contemporary art in the Upper Hudson Valley and Adirondack regions.

Artists of the Mohawk Hudson Region opens Saturday, October 12, at The Hyde Collection. The exhibition runs through December 4.

About the juror
Victoria Palermo is a prominent regional artist, educator, and resident. Working in both two and three dimensions, Palermo explores light and color in works exhibited in such varied spaces as bus stations, airports, and the grounds of museums. With exhibitions across the nation, long-term teaching appointments at Skidmore College and SUNY Adirondack, and additional assignments at Williams College and the University of Iowa, she has been featured in Sculpture and The New York Times, and has received awards from the New York Foundation for the Arts and the New York State Council of the Arts. She was a 2019 Artist Panelist for the NYFA (New York Foundation for the Arts) Fellowship Awards for Architecture/ Environmental Structures and Design.
