There is still time left in our summer exhibitions to plan a group tour! The Hyde Collection is proud to give group tours to thousands of visitors each year. We invite you to visit soon to learn more about the following exhibitions from our Museum educators and knowledgeable docents:
From the Rooftops: John Sloan and the Art of a New Urban Space in Wood Gallery: The Ashcan School painter John Sloan (1871–1951) was preoccupied with the New York City rooftop in the first half of the twentieth century. This setting factors in some of his most iconic and celebrated works, many of which focus on immigrant and working-class subjects. This loan exhibition offers an in-depth examination of Sloan’s decades-long fascination with the life of the urban rooftop with nearly thirty of his paintings, prints, and drawings and an additional thirty works from more than a dozen notable contemporaries, including William Glackens, Reginald Marsh, Walter Rosenblum, Weegee, and George Ault.

Masterpieces Under the Microscope: Andrea della Robbia and James Brade Sword in Whitney-Renz Gallery: Andrea della Robbia’s Virgin Mary is unveiled for the first time since undergoing conservation at Williamstown + Atlanta Art Conservation Center. The statue dates to ca. 1480 and, throughout the years, cracks in the glazed surface were filled and patches made to the Virgin’s cloak, shoulder, and the back of her head. Through a grant from the Greater Hudson Heritage Network, Virgin Mary was carefully removed from Hyde House, packed, and shipped to Williamstown, where it was painstakingly conserved. Masterpieces Under the Microscope examines the Museum’s commitment to preserving the della Robbia family’s legacy. The Hyde Collection is proud to be one of just five museums in the United States with sculptures by all three generations of the famous della Robbia family.

Select Masterworks from the Feibes & Schmitt Collection in Feibes & Schmitt Gallery: In 2017, The Hyde celebrated a major milestone, the opening of a gallery intended to promote Modern and Contemporary art of the postwar period. The inaugural exhibition of the Feibes & Schmiitt Gallery comprised pieces from the donors’ stunning collection amassed during their decades together in Schenectady. The Hyde now opens a new installation of masterworks from the Feibes & Schmitt gift. Among the artists represented are Josef Albers, Jean (Hans) Arp, Ellsworth Kelly, Sol LeWitt, Louise Nevelson, Bridget Riley, and Andy Warhol.

From Bauhaus to Black Mountain College in Whitney-Renz Gallery: From Bauhaus to Black Mountain College celebrates the 100th anniversary of Bauhaus, the highly influential, short-lived art movement shuttered by the Nazis. Drawing from The Hyde’s permanent collection of twentieth-century art, the exhibition examines the Bauhaus’s enduring influence on American Modernism by highlighting works by artists such as Josef Albers, Lyonel Feininger, Wassily Kandinsky, and Ilya Bolotowsky, among others.
