Portraits in Art
NYS Learning Standards: English Language Arts: 1,3; Visual Arts: 1,2,3,4
• Tour historic Hyde House
• Learn about history and culture through portrait painting
• Learn about famous artists through the portraits they made
• Learn to look for clues in portrait paintings to unlock the secrets of the sitter
• In the Louis P. Brown Art Studio draw and paint your own self-portrait
• Grades PreK-4 • 90-120 minutes
Art Critique
NYS Learning Standards: English Language Arts: 1,3; Visual Arts: 1,2,3,4
• View work from The Hyde’s permanent collection and temporary exhibitions
• Learn how to look at and talk about art
• Identify the elements of art and principles of design
• Students will discuss artwork with their classmates to introduce peer discussion and public speaking skills
• Grades 4-12 • 90-120 minutes (tour only)
Architecture
NYS Learning Standards: English Language Arts: 1; Mathematics, Science, and Technology: 1,5,7; Visual Arts: 1,2,3,4
• Tour the Museum and learn about modern and historic architectural elements
• Explore architecture on the Museum grounds (weather permitting)
• Discuss the role of the architect in creating a building
• Learn how architects balance function, personal interest, and aesthetic appeal • In the Louis P. Brown Art Studio take on the role of the architect to design the home of your dreams!
• Grades PreK-12 • 90-120 minutes
Stories in Art
NYS Learning Standards: English Language Arts: 1,2; Visual Arts: 1,2,3,4
• Tour historic Hyde House
• Learn how artists use myths, legends, and fables as inspiration
• Learn about stories in art from many different time periods and cultures
• In the Louis P. Brown Art Studio select one of Aesop’s fables to create your own illustrated work of art
• Grades PreK-6 • 90-120 minutes
The Middle Ages & The Renaissance
NYS Learning Standards: English Language Arts: 1; Mathematics, Science, and Technology: 1,7; Social Studies: 2; Visual Arts: 1,2,4.
• Tour the Museum’s collection of period artwork, furniture, and tapestries
• Gain a better understanding of a past era
• Study art, culture, and history of these time periods
• In the Louis P. Brown Art Studio learn how to make egg tempera paints, a Medieval technique, to use in the creation of your own work of art
• Grades 4-12 • 120 minutes
The American Renaissance
NYS Learning Standards: English: 1,3; Social Studies: 1; Visual Arts: 3,4
• Gain a better understanding of local heritage and history
• Tour historic Hyde House and the permanent collection
• Learn about the era of the American Renaissance that shaped this region
• Learn how the Hyde family helped develop Glens Falls during this flourishing period of American art and cultural history
• Grades 7-12 • 60 minutes (tour only)
MORE THAN TOURS
Lunch in the Butterfly Garden
Schedule a visit in the fall or spring and receive special access to the Butterfly Garden. Your class can enjoy their bag lunches surrounded by the beautiful water fountain, flowers, and shady trees.
Take-Back Packs
Don’t have time for your class to stop and shop in The Museum Store? To make your trip easy but memorable, the Museum now offers Take-Back Packs which can be ordered ahead of time and waiting for your class at the end of the trip. These packs are full of goodies that will remind your students of their special visit. Each pack will be made up of carefully selected items suitable for students in grades 1-6. Look for order forms in your school tour confirmation packet.

• A pre-visit or stand alone program
• Learn about The Hyde Collection in your own classroom with an outreach visit
• A Museum educator will visit your classroom to discuss your upcoming field trip to The Hyde Collection and explore the highlights of the permanent collection and the history of historic Hyde House

Do you want to assign students extra-credit or special project opportunities? Try our afternoon and weekend programs. Just ask to see your student’s Discovery Card after a visit to The Hyde Collection and you’ll know they were here.
