The Hyde Invites Art Enthusiasts to Historic Old Lyme

Travel with The Hyde to Old Lyme, Connecticut on Wednesday, August 19, to enjoy a day of art, culture and history. Guests on this tour will also have the opportunity to meet Cheryl Martin, The Hyde’s new development associate.

The morning begins at the Florence Griswold Museum with a docent-led tour of historic Griswold House and its impressive art galleries. The collection spans the history of American art from the eighteenth century to the present day and includes Childe Hassam’s painting, Summer Evening, a perfect pairing to his Geraniums in The Hyde’s permanent collection.

Guests will also learn about Florence Griswold’s boardinghouse and the creation of the Lyme Art Colony with plenty of free time to explore the breathtaking gardens and grounds that inspired so many paintings by the Lyme Art Colony artists. Following a lunch at the museum café, guests will visit the Lyme Art Association, the very first gallery in America built by a summer art colony, featuring a short lecture about artist colonies in the past and present.

The day will conclude with a tour through Old Lyme’s shops and private galleries, including Cooley Gallery, a nationally recognized dealer of American art.
