Summer Classes for Children Include Puppet Theater and Magic
The Hyde Collection is offering classes and workshops for young artists in July and August. From Tuesday, July 8 through Friday, July 11 teaching artist Gabi Moore will lead two in depth drawing classes: The Life of the Shadow for ages 8 – 12 from 10:30 am – 12:30 pm and Out of the Shadows for ages 12 to 18 from 1:30pm – 3:30 pm. Students will explore various techniques of creating light and dark in drawing and will practice drawing skills using dry and wet media and 2-D design. Cost is $60.00 for non-members and $50.00 for members, all materials included. The registrations deadline is Friday, June 30th.
Three weeks of art workshops for ages 6 to 12 are planned to run Tuesdays through Fridays, 10:30am – 12:30pm. Session 1 will be from July 15 – July 18; Session 2 is August 12 through August 15; Session 3 is August 19 through August 22. Workshop fees are $45 for member and $55.00 for non-members for each four day session. Children are welcome to register for all three sessions; the projects will be different each week. Registrations will be taken up to the day of the start of each session, but space is limited.
Specialty classes offered this summer are The Art of Magic and Shadow Puppet Theater. The Art of Magic, with master magician Alan Edstrom, is for ages 8 to 12 and will be conducted on Saturday, July 26 from 10:30am – 4:00pm. Participants will learn the art of tricking the eye and creating stage illusions. The day will conclude at 3pm with a magic show for friends and family. Enrollment is limited to 10 students. Cost for the day long program is $30.00 for museum members and $40.00 for nonmembers, and the registration deadline is Wednesday, July 23. Shadow Puppet Theater with theater artist Johnna Maiorella, for ages 7 to 12, will include fun theater games, puppet and set making, and a shadow theater performance. This program will run from Tuesday through Friday, July 29th through August 1st from 10:00am to 2 pm with a registration deadline of Wednesday, July 23, and will be repeated the following week, Tuesday through Friday, August 5 through August 8, with registrations due by Wednesday, July 30. Cost for the Shadow Puppet Theater is $90.00 for museum members and $100.00 for non-members.
These programs are crafted to coordinate with the Museum’s summer exhibitions Larry Kagan: Lying Shadows in Wood Gallery and Emerging Shadows: Edward Hopper and His Contemporaries in Hoopes Gallery. These exhibitions run from June 14 through September 14, 2014.
