Woodstock Lecture & Tour

Hyde to host Woodstock Artists Tour; pre-trip lecture

Glens Falls, NY – The Hyde Collection’s Travel Committee announces plans for a single-day Woodstock Artists Tour on Thursday, July 29, 2010. In preparation for the trip, the Museum’s Director of Education Sara Boivin will present a lecture on Woodstock on June 24.

In Woodstock, New York, considered an active artists’ colony since the late 1800s, Hyde travelers will experience a diverse tour prepared by the Woodstock Arts Consortium. Visits will include a walking tour of Byrdcliffe Arts and Crafts Colony and the Cox Gallery where James Cox, one of America’s foremost experts on twentieth and twenty-first century American art, will give a brief talk. A gourmet lunch will be served at Oriole9 Restaurant, followed by free time to explore Woodstock’s galleries and boutiques.

The afternoon will include a tour of the Woodstock Artists Association and Museum, dubbed the “local Louvre” by Life Magazine in 1938, followed by a lecture on Yasuo Kuniyoshi from noted art scholar Tom Wolf. The group will also visit Opus 40, where sculptor Harvey Fite used Mayan building techniques to craft a six-acre land sculpture.

The pre-trip lecture is open to travelers and non-travelers alike and focuses on Woodstock and the impact this area had on artists represented in The Hyde’s permanent collection. Scheduled for 5 pm on Thursday, the 24th, the talk will be followed by a wine & cheese reception. Admission is free to Hyde members; non-member admission is by donation, suggested at $5 per person. Reservations are recommended and can be made by calling 518-792-1761, ext. 13.

Buses will depart Queensbury from Northway Exit 19 at 6:30 am and will pick up additional passengers at Exit 15 at 7:00 am and at Exit 8 at 7:30 am. Travelers are expected to return between 7:45 and 8:45 pm, depending on their exit location. The cost per person, which includes motorcoach transportation, lunch, admission, and tours, is $104 for Hyde members and $129 for all others. The reservation deadline for this trip is Thursday, July 15, 2010.

The final day trip planned by The Hyde for 2010 is a visit to the New Britain Museum of American Art in New Britain, CT on Thursday, October 14.
