Hyde presents talk on most famous art forger

On Sunday, May 16, 2010, The Hyde Collection welcomes Jonathan Lopez for a lecture on the famous art forger, Han van Meegeren. Lopez, author of The Man Who Made Vermeers: Unvarnishing the Legend of Master Forger Han van Meegeren, will discuss the sordid life of the world's most famous art forger. For his book, Lopez conducted extensive archival research in four countries, and in five languages to tell, for the first time, the real story of this notorious art forger.

Lopez explores the world of illicit commerce in Europe between World War I and World War II, when Van Meegeren and his associates made a living making and selling fake Old Masters. Van Meegeren was a key player during the 1920s and 30s, landing fakes with powerful dealers and duping famous collectors such as Andrew Mellon. In fact, Van Meegeren is the creator of a painting in The Hyde Collection titled Girl with the Blue Bow (ca. 1924), acquired by Museum founder Charlotte Hyde in 1937. In conjunction with this program, the painting will be on view in the lower level Rotunda Gallery from May 10 until May 24.

The lecture on Sunday, May 16, will be held at 3pm and will be followed by a book signing with the author. A limited supply of books will be on sale the date of the talk. Admission to the talk is free for members; and free upon admission donation for others. Suggested donation is $5. For registration and more information, contact The Hyde’s Education Office at 5180792-1761 ext.27 or
