Hyde announces High School Juried show winners
On Sunday, May 2, 2010, nearly 100 area high school art students were recognized during a special awards ceremony at The Hyde Collection in Glens Falls. Selected from more than 1,000 entries, the top 100 works were chosen to be highlighted in the Nineteenth Annual Regional Juried High School Exhibition at the Museum.
The exhibition is a showcase of ninth-through-twelfth grade art students’ talent and creativity. This unique show allows participating students to experience the preparation, submission, and jurying process crucial to their artistic development. The young artists entering the 2010 juried competition hail from as many as forty area schools from Warren, Washington, Saratoga, Hamilton, and Essex counties.
Nearly 300 individuals viewed the show on Sunday, including students, their teachers, families, and guests. Nine artists won top prizes for their work in the exhibition, sponsored by C.R. Bard. Best in Show was presented to Lake George Central School’s Rachel Jackson, Grade 12, for her mixed media On Nature’s Wings. The Curator’s Choice Awards, selected by The Hyde’s Erin Coe, were awarded to: Amanda Halse, Grade 12, Tied Down, marker, Fort Ann Central School and James Schuessler, Grade12, Untitled photo series, Shenendehowa Central School. The Juried Show Committee Award was given to Cambridge Central School’s Will Thomas for his pen and ink drawing, Advent. Honorable Mention awards, selected by juror Joel Gill, were presented to Glens Falls City School’s Ella Hanrahan, Grade 12, for her Emma acrylic, as well as to Queensbury Union Free School’s Ryan Sullivan, Grade 11, for his Welcome to This World painting; Waterford-Halfmoon Union Free School student Alysha Wilcox, Grade 12, for her photograph Drip Drop; South Glens Falls Central School’s Devan Mattison, Grade 12, for the charcoal pencil Hands & Legs,and Glens Falls City School’s Trevor Mann for his photograph Just Another Day on the Job.
This year’s juror, Joel Gill, is Chair of the Foundations Department at the New Hampshire Institute of Art. The exhibition is on display in the Charles R. Wood Gallery at The Hyde Collection through Sunday, May 23, 2010.
