Degas & Opera talk by Peter Wynne this Sunday, 2pm

As part of the ongoing Season of Degas, The Hyde Collection will host a lecture on Sunday, September 13, 2009 at 2 pm on French Impressionist Edgar Degas’ connection to opera.

Degas & Opera, presented by lecturer Peter Wynne, will explore Degas and his love for the musical genre. Tailoring the talk to The Hyde’s Degas & Music exhibition, Wynne will explore the relationship of the artist’s work with those paintings and sculptures directly relating to contemporary opera performances of the period. Wynne’s illustrated lecture will include images from the exhibition and beyond and will be accompanied by a corresponding musical score.

Wynne, known for his excellent speaking voice, has hosted pre-concert and pre-performance lectures in conjunction with the Metropolitan Opera’s high definition television broadcasts and for the Northeastern Pennsylvania Philharmonic. He has been featured on NPR as well as many other New York and Pennsylvania radio stations. In 1991, Wynne produced and hosted A Chekhov Trilogy, an opera by Richard Wargo of the Sembrich Opera Museum, Bolton Landing, NY, and in 1991, his radio feature on the Metropolitan Opera world premiere of The Ghost of Versaille, by composer John Corigliano and librettist William Hoffman aired on the Morning Edition, NPR.

Currently, Wynne is an independent lecturer on music and opera and writer of the program notes for the Northeastern Pennsylvania Philharmonic.

Admission to the lecture is free and open to the public and will be held in the Museum’s Helen Froehlich Auditorium. Seating is limited so those interested in attending are asked to call The Hyde at 518-792-1761, ext. 27 to make reservations.

A final lecture by guest curators of The Hyde’s Degas & Music exhibition (July 12 through October 18) is also scheduled for Saturday, October 3. This talk will be free for Hyde Collection members and $8 general admission.
