One hundred works from nearly ninety area high school art students will be exhibited as part of The Hyde Collection’s Fourteenth Annual Regional Juried High School Exhibition from Sunday, May 1 through Sunday, May 22, 2005. The exhibition, sponsored by Tribune Media Services, is an exciting showcase of talent and creativity by art students in grades 9-12 from southern Essex, Warren, Washington, and northern Saratoga Counties. This unique show affords students the opportunity to go through the preparation, submission, and jurying process that is crucial to both artistic and professional development.

Approximately 900 works were submitted by twenty school districts. The selected works, including drawings, paintings, jewelry, ceramics, photography, and electronic media will be featured in the Museum’s Charles R. Wood Gallery. This year’s five Best in Show winners are: Nikolett Bodai, The Warmth Within Me, oil pastel, South Glens Falls High School; Patrick Cooney, Studying Chairs, scratchboard, South Glens Falls High School; Shannon Mulshine, City Eyes, micron pen and graphite pencil, Queensbury High School; Christina Stromberg, Texture, acrylic paint, Bolton High School; and Christy Williams, Mirror, oil, Saratoga Springs High School. The jurors were: Karene Tarquin Faul, Professor of Art and Chairperson of the Art Department at The College of Saint Rose; David Miller, Tuthill Professor of Studio Art and Director of Schick Art Gallery at Skidmore College, and Frank Vurraro, a local artist and long time Art Instructor & District Director of Art Education for the Niskayuna Central Schools.

The Hyde Collection will host an Artist’s Reception and Awards Ceremony on Saturday, May 14, 2005 from 1 to 3PM. The winner of a $500 Tribune Media Scholarship will be awarded to one student whose outstanding work is chosen by the Museum’s director, Randall Suffolk. The five Best in Show winners will receive $50 gift certificates that have been generously donated by local art supply and art related businesses. Of these five students, two will be selected and receive a scholarship toward attendance at Skidmore College’s prestigious Summer Six Art Program. All students featured in the exhibition will be recognized with a Certificate of Excellence and an exhibition tee shirt. The awards ceremony is FREE and the public is invited to join the artists, their parents, and friends to celebrate their hard work.
