One hundred works from more than 1,100 entries by area high school art students are now exhibited in The Juried Show: 21st Annual Regional Juried High School Art Exhibition at The Hyde Collection, 161 Warren Street, Glens Falls, New York. The show runs through Sunday, May 27, 2012, in the Wood Gallery.

Curated by Hyde curator of education June Leary, this exhibition is not only a showcase of students’ talent and creativity but is also designed to allow them to experience the preparation, submission, and adjudication process crucial to their artistic development. The young artists who entered the competition hail from high schools in Warren, Washington, Saratoga, Hamilton, and Essex counties.

Entries were submitted digitally for review by a jury composed of the following arts professionals: Kristen Freeborn, an illustrator and graphic artist, teaches graphic design and photography at SUNY Adirondack College with an emphasis on photographic illustration. Art teacher and painter Gabi Moore leads workshops in Cambridge for artists of all ages. She is also an adjunct professor of drawing and painting at Fordham University in New York City. Lars Turin is the facilities director for the Saratoga Clay Arts Center and is a fine art potter and sculptor. He began teaching in 1972 in the Guilderland Central School District and is now adjunct instructor of ceramics and sculpture at the Emma Willard School in Troy, New York.

The Hyde Collection’s Executive Director David F. Setford noted, “We are so pleased that The Juried Show has become part of The Hyde legacy and that we have the privilege of showcasing the extraordinary works of these talented students each year. This annual competition is a key element in The Hyde’s focus on arts education and its connections to the local communities we serve.”

An Awards Ceremony will be held for the students and their families at The Hyde Collection on Sunday, May 20, 2012 at 1pm. Students and their families will be admitted free.All students with art in the exhibition will be recognized at that event and the following students will be highlighted for winning special awards: Best in Show: Alison Katz from Saratoga Springs; The Curator’s Choice Award: Kelsey Alfonso from Lake George; CR Bard Foundation Curator’s Choice Award: Jessica Trudeau from South Glens Falls; The Juror’s Show Committee Choice Award: Alison Katz from Saratoga Springs; and in The Honorable Mention Award category: Kayla Chetney from Queensbury; Caitlyn Kenney from North Warren; Alexis Koliada from Glens Falls; Rachel Anne Nafis from Shenendehowa; and Katelyn Ostrander from South Glens Falls.
