This exhibition features sixty-four of the finest examples of American art from the distinguished collections of the New Britain Museum of American Art. The museum, founded in 1903, is considered the first institution in the nation to focus exclusively on American art. After one hundred years of steady growth the New Britain's collection numbers more than 5,000 works spanning 250 years of American art history. This exhibition offers a rich survey of American artistic achievement from colonial portraiture, the Hudson River School, and American Impressionism, to the Ash Can School, early modernism, and American scene painting. Featured artists include Milton Avery, Romare Bearden, Frederic Edwin Church, John Singleton Copley, Thomas Cole, Frederick Carl Frieseke, Childe Hassam, Robert Henri, Georgia O'Keeffe, Maurice Prendergast, and Benjamin West.
