The first ever exhibition to celebrate the masterful art and superlative collection of American landscapist James A. Suydam. An accomplished painter in his own right, Suydam assembled a rich collection of work by his American colleagues including major paintings by John F. Kensett, Asher B. Durand, Frederic Edwin Church, and Sanford R. Gifford. The exhibition of fifty-five works will highlight the finest examples of Suydam’s art and his collection, which the artist left to the National Academy of Design upon his death in 1865. The Suydam bequest remains one of the few intact nineteenth-century artists’ collections in existence. Accompanied by a fully–illustrated catalogue.

The exhibition is organized by the National Academy Museum, New York. Funding for Luminist Horizons has been made possible by the generous support of the Henry Luce Foundation, the National Endowment for the Arts, Eli Wilner & Company, The Lucelia Fund, The Robert Lehman Foundation, The Brown Foundation, Inc., of Houston, Furthermore: A Program of the J. M. Kaplan Fund, and the Asher B. Durand Society of the National Academy Museum.
